Interested in borrowing MCAT or DAT prep books completely free? George Mason University Health Professions Advising is excited to offer free MCAT or DAT prep books from our library to current students that apply to our borrowing program!

Our Test Prep Borrowing Program operates on an rolling-based system. This means that applications can be submitted at any time and are processed continuously. There are a limited number of books available; thus, all applicants may not be awarded books.

These books are primarily useful for content review; therefore, we strongly suggest incorporating additional resources (see Test Prep Resources) in your study plan to gain more question exposure and strengthen testing stamina.

Eligibility:

1. Must be a current George Mason University student at the time of application.
2. Must have a scheduled MCAT or DAT within 6 months (confirmation is required).
3. Demonstrate financial need

There are a limited number of books available; thus, all applicants may not be awarded books. Other factors such as GPA, number of prerequisite courses completed at the time of application, etc may also be considered.

  • Tiny Tots Health Initiative: Volunteering Opportunity

We are a non-profit aimed at bringing healthcare education through handwritten cards to local under-resourced healthcare facilities that service youth from low-income backgrounds and minority statuses especially.

As we are trying to expand to have a greater impact, are there any mailing lists where this message can be distributed (ex. prehealth/predental). Any interested person can feel free to reach us through this email in order to be a potential representative for the state. As a state liaison, one will be able to help find and add new healthcare facilities as well as be the first point of contact for volunteers.

  • Mandated Reporter Training With Fairfax County Department of Family Services (4/21)

Join Fairfax County Department of Family Services for this interactive training targeting any mandated reporter working who is new to the field or a seasoned professional. This training will review all the categories of abuse and neglect recognized in the state of Virginia, explain what is outside the scope of Child Protective Services (CPS), provide you with the resources to make a report to CPS, and answer all your questions about CPS. OSCAR holds the celebration three times a year, inviting undergraduate students to share their projects with the Mason community and celebrate what other Mason undergraduate students have accomplished this year. We welcome projects as part of a course, an OSCAR program, in a student organization, or your independent projects. Build your resume with the VAW Global Team Leader Fellowship! This leadership opportunity is generally an 8-10 month intensive fellowship — valuable to future nurses, physicians, physicians assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, as well as other future healthcare providers and anyone interested in gaining skills in public health while supporting healthcare systems around the world.

This pre-professional internship entails around 3-5 hours per week and is a truly enriching experience that will provide you with great skills for professional life such as learning about healthcare in a global context, gaining effective leadership and communication skills, acquiring international and public health work experience, and attending several orientations and workshops focused on personal development and cultural sensitivity. 

Applications are open to any students, regardless of experience, class level, or major.  This fellowship takes place as a hybrid role – partly on campus and partly remote.

The GeorgeSquared, Advanced Biomedical Sciences Certificate program, has invited all George Mason students and alumni to their presentation series this spring. Sessions will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4 PM (FULL SCHEDULE HERE) and include representatives from programs in medicine, dentistry, PA, and more!   • Free Knack Tutoring For Select Courses

We hope you are having a wonderful start to your semester.  We are writing to let you know about a new tutoring service available this fall to George Mason students enrolled in select courses across the university – and to remind you of the wide variety of resources available to students through Learning Services and other existing tutoring centers.
Knack Tutoring: The university has partnered with Knack, a peer-to-peer tutoring platform, to provide students with free access to high-level tutoring services for 26 undergraduate courses in nine departments (see list below ).  Knack hires high-achieving George Mason students, trains them as tutors, and provides a platform for students in these courses to sign up for and receive tutoring, either online or in-person. This service is a supplement to the existing tutoring resources at George Mason.   • Pre-PA Society: PA-S1 Guest Speaker: NHSC Scholar (4/17)

Physician Assistant student and NHSC Scholar, Ian Leighninger, will be discussing his journey to PA school and the benefits of being an NHSC Scholar. The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program awards scholarships to students pursuing an eligible training or degree program for a primary care health profession. In return, scholars commit to providing primary care health services in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) and is a great way to financially plan for PA school.

  • Important Changes to the 2025 ADEA AADSAS (Dental School) Application

Are you applying to dental school this year? Please read below for several important changes to this year’s application!

    • Removal of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) question from the application,
    • Removal of the gender question and
    • Changed the personal statement prompt to read: What motivated you to pursue a career in oral health? In your response, you may wish to describe and highlight your strengths, experiences, background and uniqueness that will contribute to your success in this career.
    • Updated the Academic/License Infraction questions to prohibit updates after submission.
    • ADEA AADSAS® Fee Assistance Program (FAP) will open earlier to improve the application process. The ADEA AADSAS Fee Assistance Program (FAP) is a fee waiver program that helps eligible individuals who need financial support for their dental school application. Eligible applicants approved for FAP receive a fee waiver for three dental school applications in ADEA AADSAS, a value of $494. Eligible applicants should submit the FAP application between April 16, 2025, and June 1, 2025, and plan to open an ADEA AADSAS account by June 1. Approved applicants will have 30 days after notification to submit to ADEA AADSAS.

  • Medical School Application 2025-2026 Cycle Opening Dates

AMCAS (American Medical College Application Service) is the centralized medical school application processing service for most allopathic (MD) medical schools. The 2025-26 AMCAS will open on May 1. The first day you can submit is on May 27. The earliest a medical school can receive an application is on June 27. New for the 2025-26 Cycle: The AAMC Letter Writer Portal streamlines the letter submission process and provides an enhanced user experience for both authors and applicants. The portal offers:  

  • Convenient email-based access to letter requests. 
  • A new dashboard with improved request management. 
  • The ability for applicants to send letter requests directly from the AMCAS application.

AACOMAS (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service) is the centralized online application service for U.S. colleges of osteopathic (DO) medicine.   • Weill Cornell Emergency Medicine: Summer Apprenticeship Program (4/20)

The DedicatED Summer Apprenticeship Program is a summer experience for pre-medical students who are highly motivated, but have not had experiences in the medical field, or received guidance in positioning themselves to apply successfully to medical school. Our objective is to introduce our apprentices to the medical field and scholarship, connect them to mentorship and peer networks, and demystify the medical school application process. Applicants will be considered on an individual basis with consideration given to those who have a serious interest in addressing the healthcare needs of the underserved and without ready access to mentorship and resume-building opportunities.

Lectures are virtual, on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Apprentices will:

  • Be paired with a medical student and physician mentor

  • VCU OT Academy Summer Program (6/9-6/13)

OT Academy is a pathway program drawing participants from underrepresented minority (URM) populations designed to promote knowledge and understanding of the profession of occupational therapy (OT) while preparing for application to OT programs. Through engagement in presentations, discussions, and hands-on opportunities, participants will gain skills required to be a competitive applicant, and a successful and professional student in a rigorous graduate program.

OT Academy is open to sophomore, junior, senior college students, and post-baccalaureates with a strong interest in the field of Occupational Therapy. Preference will be given to those who are closer to application to an OT program.

Lunch is provided on session days. A modest stipend is provided. Housing options provided to students that are interested in living on campus during the program.

Participants must be able to provide or ensure use of laptop/computer during the program.

  • AOA/AOSA Opportunities in Optometry Grants (due 7/1)

To promote diversity and equity in the optometric profession for generations to come, the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) have created the AOA/AOSA Opportunities in Optometry Grant program. This fund is designed as a one-time $1500 stipend for under-represented minority students interested in the field of optometry to help defray the costs associated with applying to optometry school.

Multiple grants of $1,500 each will be awarded annually to students who are chosen by the selection committee. Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria to be considered by the selection committee. These funds can be used toward the very first steps necessary when pursuing a doctor of optometry degree – off-setting the cost of the OAT exam, school application costs, professional attire or travel costs associated with interviews.

  • Yale-Mentored Research Opportunity- Global Health Experiential Fellowship (GHEF)

The Global Health Experiential Fellowship (GHEF) is a five-week in-person experience for current or recently graduated undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, with opportunity to participate in additional virtual activities prior to and following your time in Uganda. Fellows will present their preliminary research findings at the annual Global Health Equity Symposium upon return in the Fall. Fellows will be mentored by global health practitioners, including Yale Medical School researchers and ETH directors Dr. Robert Rosenheck and Dr. Yang Jae Lee, and work alongside Ugandan undergraduate and masters level students on a high-impact research project in a key topic related to global health. Fellows have the chance to continue their work after the summer and publish a peer-reviewed publication on their research in a key topic related to global health. 

The goals of the fellowship are to promote intercultural understanding and provide exposure to collaborative and equitable global health practice, implementation science, and research.

recent review of the Global Health Experiential Fellowship found that both Ugandan and American fellows achieved significant growth in areas of career development, research skills, and cultural exposure. The program’s success is highlighted in a paper submitted to the Annals of Global Health journal, co-authored by leaders in global health education such as Dr. Robert Rohrbaugh, Professor of Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine; Dr. Robert Rosenheck, Professor of Psychiatry and Public Health at the Yale School of Medicine; Dr. Peter Waiswa, Associate Professor of Public Health at Makerere University; Dr. Adam Brown, Professor of Psychology at the New School for Social Research; and Dr. Brandon Kohrt, Charles and Sonia Akman Professor of Global Psychiatry at George Washington University.

  • National Student Leadership Conference Summer Positions

The NSLC offers pre-college summer programs for high school students facilitated by current and recently graduated college students. The NSLC’s main focus is on developing leadership capacity within ambitious young adults while introducing the wide array of career possibilities within their fields of interest.

The Medicine and Healthcare (HEAL) program is looking to hire several undergraduate students and recent graduates to serve as Team Advisors (TA) and Assistant Team Advisors (ATA) for the HEAL program this summer as well as NSLC’s other various programs. We are seeking applicants who study or have a significant background in biology, neuroscience, chemistry, and other related fields that also enjoy working with high school students.

Both the TA and ATA positions are paid and include covered travel, room and board, and meals. All roles and responsibilities of a Team Advisor/Assistant Team Advisor are listed within the job posting.

They also have an upbeat disposition, as well as an interest in serving our population of campers with a range of neuromuscular diseases. This is a rare and unique opportunity for anyone wanting to pursue a career in the medical field, health sciences, any public service profession, or anyone wanting to make a difference!

The mission of Camp Promise is to provide a FREE barrier-free, overnight camp for kids, teens, and adults (13 years of age and older) with neuromuscular diseases — regardless of capability, or ability to pay. Our camper-focused programming builds independence, confidence, and life skills through traditional camp activities and by bringing campers new experiences through adaptation, technology, and creativity.

As a camp counselor, typically, you would work one-on-one with the same camper for the duration of the camp session. You would serve as your camper’s primary caregiver and are responsible for being a friend to your camper throughout the week. You will also assist and encourage all campers to participate in activities, assist other counselors in providing personal care when needed (which can include bathing, toileting, eating, and more) to their campers, and guide campers in their personal growth and acquisition of independence. If camp counselor doesn’t sound like your jam, please reach and we may be able to work together to find a solution.

Being a volunteer is an overnight position – lodging and meals are provided at no charge for the week. Volunteers will earn 120 hours of community service, along with a life-changing experience and the most amazing memories to last a lifetime! Come and experience the magic of Camp Promise with us!
